Anyone here who’s gone from working as a data scientist to a more traditional statistician role? Current data scientist but a friend of mine works at the bureau of labor statistics as a survey statistician, and does a lot more traditional stats work. Very academic. Anyone done this before?

What is a traditional statistician role in your opinion? I feel they’d either be called Analysts or Data Scientists

That’s what I did. moved from DS to a role that is comparable to what you describe. Remember that using contemporary tools is expected of DS as a corporation. Modern tools, agile work, etc., could be discouraged in a bureaucracy.
You ought to ascertain precisely the tools (software, programming language, data type, etc.) they employ. What is the age of the new team members? What is the anticipated amount of ad hoc work? How long does your task take you—a few months or a few hours?

Yes, it won’t be enjoyable for you if you don’t enjoy reading about survey statistics and working with survey data.
