If so, a couple questions:
- how’d you do it?
- did your total comp go down when you did?
- was it worth it?
Thanks in Advance!

Thanks in Advance!
Hey, I’m thinking of making such a switch. I studied numerous languages as a computer scientist. I’m talking C++, Python, Django, and a little bit of R, well apart from the basic Java languages.
I have been informed by several people that Data Science requires prior knowledge of Python and R. So I should think it would be a seamless transition? Do let me know
Yes, I did. I kind of just started working with them more since I have a lot of software engineers on my team, so it was really natural. In fact, my comp increased, but it was only because I took on project leadership. Given that I’m now a better engineer, it was worthwhile. However, I would prefer to return to more modeling-heavy roles.
Some people in data science transition to software engineering because both roles share computer science fundamentals, though they serve different purposes. Despite their differences, there’s overlap between them, making it feasible for data scientists to switch to software engineering roles.
I did, kinda. I’m on a small team of data scientists, and since I had the most software-focused background (others are more into stats and theory), I took the lead on setting up our prediction service and infrastructure. Over time, I moved more into software engineering. Last month, my boss asked if I wanted to change my title, but I don’t mind and still go by data scientist. No change in pay or treatment.
