Are coursera certificates for data science, ML etc worth it?

Hey there,

I’ve been diving into some excellent data science courses on Coursera, including ones from Johns Hopkins and Stanford.

I’m wondering about the value of paying for these courses. I haven’t shelled out any cash yet because I’m not sure if it’s worth it. From what I’ve gathered, completing a course gives you a confirmation on your Coursera profile, but you only miss out on the signed certificate and LinkedIn badges if you don’t pay.

Are these certificates important? Do employers care about them? And could it be risky to list coursework on my resume without the certificate?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has paid for the certificate and what their thoughts are.

Thanks for any insights!

Paying for Coursera certificates can be worth it depending on your goals. They add credibility and can enhance your resume and LinkedIn profile, especially if they’re from reputable institutions like Johns Hopkins or Stanford. Employers value skills and practical experience more, so focus on projects and applying what you learn. Certificates can motivate you to complete courses, but you can still list completed coursework on your resume even without them. If you believe the certificate will help your career and can afford it, it might be a good investment. Otherwise, the knowledge and skills are what really matter.

Your aims will determine if paying for Coursera certification is worthwhile. They might not be as respected as degrees or years of experience, but they can show dedication and growth. Companies could consider them valuable for certain positions or as further proof of expertise. Although there is little danger involved, listing coursework without credentials is not formally recognized. Perspective gained from those who have paid is often quite beneficial.
