Applying for a DE Role as a Current DS, is 3 Weeks of Prep Too Optimistic?

Hi forum…,

I recently got contacted by a recruiter about a Senior Data Engineer position at a major streaming service. While I’m interested in the role, I don’t feel adequately prepared. In my current job as a Data Scientist, I use Python and SQL to build basic tools for my team, but not to the level a true Data Engineer would. My understanding of data structures is limited to everyday use of dictionaries and lists.

I’m confident I can prepare for SQL, but I’m less sure about my Python skills. Should I apply and risk bombing the interview, or not try at all? I’ve been frustrated with my current job due to no raises or annual increments in the last three years. Plus, I’ve discovered that I enjoy writing Python code to build things, so this could be a good opportunity to transition into a Data Engineering role.

Is three weeks of prep too optimistic? What do you think?

Three weeks is a bit tight, but if you’re committed, you can make progress. Focus on improving your Python and SQL skills and learning key data engineering concepts.

Knowing if you’re qualified for a job is not your job, it’s the company’s job.

Just apply if you’re interested.
